The actual photo of Arixenia does look rather different from the one I've shown you but that can be put down to the difference between a live and a pinned specimen.Christopher Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11075565866351612441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-23160136700827148922010-10-26T23:32:26.426+08:002010-10-26T23:32:26.426+08:00Awesome. In fact this morning I looked at a picture purporting to be Arixenia esau... which looked not *a bit* like this! http://tolweb.org/Dermaptera... I guess the difference may be due to growth stage.Adam Yateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03046084686097124394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-4192037527606298212010-10-26T19:21:41.779+08:002010-10-26T19:21:41.779+08:00Adam has it!

Not because arixeniids are easily recognisable as earwigs, but because I thought someone was bound to know about them already.Christopher Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11075565866351612441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-28580176418198351962010-10-26T18:16:22.188+08:002010-10-26T18:16:22.188+08:00I got it! Blast if I know what sort though. A javan one. You win, Taylor. Basal neopteran, definitely not an earwig, orthopteran or dictyopteran... and not a grylloblattid either? Maybe some kind of primitive phasmid? I'm fresh out of ideas.Reprobushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10650084661969561056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-32057886590843377992010-10-26T14:24:36.387+08:002010-10-26T14:24:36.387+08:00I'm going to take a wild guess and say its a L...I'm going to take a wild guess and say its a Lake Tahoe Benthic Stonefly (Capnia lacustra). I've never seen a picture of one but apparently its one of the few wingless plecopterans. This bug does look kind of stonefly-like but without wings, so that's my shot in the dark.Adam Yateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03046084686097124394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-18709344174282970972010-10-26T14:01:33.458+08:002010-10-26T14:01:33.458+08:00The Watcher pointed out why it's not a cricket...The Watcher pointed out why it's not a cricket. It looks cricket-ish, but doesn't have a souped-up pair of rear legs. It's got the long-ish, banded abdomen, and you can see the cerci in the shot.

But I'm struggling with the genus. I'm going to go with Grylloblata, only because the cerci look real short (though maybe that's just the aspect of the shot), and I'm pre-disposed to it, as it lives near me (though somewhat higher).Watcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02248341788957416471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5460788270738656369.post-53242627373188292012010-10-26T09:55:01.161+08:002010-10-26T09:55:01.161+08:00The first thing that came to mind was Jerusalem cr...The first thing that came to mind was Jerusalem cricket (Stenopelmatus), but on second look I know that's not right.

~KaiAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
