Because of the Christmas period lull, you're getting a double whammy:
Attributions to follow. Both images are worth full points as if they were in separate posts. I won't be putting up the follow-up posts for each at the same time, so the second image will be open to challenge until its own post is up, not when the post for the first image appears.
Update: Identity of #41 now available here. Image from here. Identity of # 42 now available here. Figure from Chaimanee et al. (2004).
Top one's a hydra, I think. Bottom has a chin, but canines, so I guess an Australopithecus?
ReplyDeleteBe gentle. I'm just a philosopher...
No clue on #40.
ReplyDelete#41 is Khoratpithecus piriyai, a recently described genus and species of Miocene ape from Thailand that shares some derived characters with orangutans. Ape fossils other than teeth are quite rare, so these are some rather extraordinary fossils.
Second one is Khoratpithecus piriyai, a pongine hominid. The extremely broad rostral dentition is an autapomorphy.
ReplyDeleteTop one is a bryozoan, probably a cheilostome, maybe Electra pilosa
ReplyDeleteThe bottom one is definatly Khoratpithecus
I would venture that #40 is a bryozoan, perhaps along the lines of Electra pilosa

#41 is indeed Khoratpithecus piriyai, a possible close relative of the orangutan. You can tell that it's not an australopithecine from the relative size of its canine tooth. Also, the dental arch is 'U-shaped' rather than parabolic (in this regard, Khoratpithecus is more similar to the extant great apes than it is to Homo and the australopithecines).
ReplyDeleteNo-one gets points for the top one, I'm afraid (Adam isn't eligible for any points at the moment). The bottom image is still up for grabs, though I have to say that you'd have to provide something pretty incredible to top what has already been said about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the second image: three points to beetlesinthebush, two points to Mike Keesey, one point to Dartian.
ReplyDelete"Adam isn't eligible for any points at the moment"
ReplyDeleteMercy rule? Broke a rule? Banned? :)
He won the last one, so he has to stand down for two rounds. He's still allowed to stir the pot, though.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, you're currently in the lead, Ted (six points).
ReplyDelete'you're currently in the lead, Ted (six points)'
ReplyDeleteWut? I got three points for identifying bug #35, two points for identifying bug #37, and one point for this. I demand justice!
But # 35 was where Adaqm took out the first round, so everyone reverted back to zero. Which puts you on three for this round so far.
ReplyDeleteDrat! I forgot about them Calvinball Rules...
